Web Cams
Another thing that I enjoy doing is watching web cameras. I find it fascinating to be able to view in real-time windows on the world. You can find a web camera in almost every country in the world. I don’t think it is even possible in a lifetime to see all the web cams that are out there. One of my favorite sites is Wavelit where you can watch a live, operator manned camera at a watering hole in a private game reserve in South Africa. This web camera is perhaps the best web camera I have ever viewed. It is almost addicting to watch the game that come to the watering hole during the day. The camera also has night vision capability so you can watch the action at night. There is also a Grizzly Cam available where you can watch two grizzly bears in their natural habitat. The camera is located atop Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver. Another recent discovery is Coles Pond WeatherCam in Walden Vermont. The camera provides a view of several bird feeders spread around the beautiful property of Coles Pond. The picture updates every 60 seconds and it is fun to watch the birds, rabbits, squirrels, deer, and even bear that come to feed there. The site also provides real-time weather data of the area and an archive of past screen captures that is fantastic. When I retire I want to do something similar with my backyard. And finally Google Earth is a great resource for finding web cameras all around the world. I could write a whole separate posting about the merits of Google Earth but suffice it to say that Google Earth is another addiction that I have no desire to break.
