Encyclopedia of LifeThe Smithsonian Institution is a leading partner in an exciting new initiative called the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL). The idea behind the project is to construct a web site accessible through a single portal for each of the 1.8 million known living species on earth. Each site will present authoritative information about things like geographic range, habitat, natural history and conservation status. It is hoped that this project will help people make wiser decisions about preserving our natural world. To read more about this ambitious project and take a virtual tour and view sample pages visit the Smithsonian web site or go to the EOL project home page.
