Still loving Ubuntu

By • on November 3, 2007

I have been using Ubuntu 7.10 for a while now and I am finding that it has almost everything I need in an OS. Recently I have been able to print to my new Canon laser jet printer on the downstairs XP machine. Today I erased a CD-RW that had an old version of Ubuntu on it and burned some files to the CD, all without a problem. I found that I am able to use my Rhapsody music service on Ubuntu without any difficulty. I have also installed a number of new applications. Miro, formerly the Democracy player, is an open source Internet TV and video player. I am using Cryptkeeper for file encryption and Ubuntu’s built in capability for digital certificates. I have switched from reading my email using Outlook on my XP machine to using Evolution on Ubuntu. About the only thing I cannot do as well on Ubuntu as on XP is digital photo editing. I currently use Adobe Lightroom for digital editing on XP and have been unable to find any application for Ubuntu that will do what Lightroom can do. Of course that is not the fault of Ubuntu, but it is one of the few things that keeps me from dumping XP completely. I have tried GIMP, which comes close, but GIMP has a steep learning curve. But overall, Ubuntu does what I need to do most of the time and does it better and with less headaches than XP. Long live Ubuntu!
