Christmas tree becomes Family tree at Lowe’s
I have come across yet another in a long string of attacks on Christianity and political correctness run amok. Lowe’s Home Improvement decided that it was no longer acceptable to call a Christmas tree a Christmas tree in it’s holiday catalog and started calling the trees ‘Family Trees.’ I am not sure what their reasoning was behind the decision. It must have had to do with the now prevalent aversion to using the word Christmas at all when referring to the Christian holiday of Christmas. It is now considered appropriate to say Seasons Greetings, or Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas in case you might possibly offend someone who is not a Christian and does not celebrate Christmas. While there may be some slight merit to this form of greeting, I do not see how it can possibly apply to the decision to rename the Christmas tree a Family tree. The Christmas tree is a symbol of a Christian holiday. It is not the symbol of a Muslim holiday, a Jewish holiday, or a Buddhist holiday. How can calling a tree that is used only as a symbol of a Christian holiday a Christmas tree possibly offend anyone? How can renaming it a Family Tree be of benefit to anyone? It makes about as much sense as renaming a menorah a candlestick holder or a minaret a tower. Where is the insult to Christianity in these names, likewise where is the insult to any religion in a Christmas tree? Luckily, due to widespread public outcry, Lowe’s changed their mind, calling the use of Family tree an inadvertent mistake. I don’t buy that explanation at all, I think the only reason Lowe’s changed it’s mind was due to the public outcry. Lowe’s should be ashamed of itself for having made such a stupid decision in the first place.
