Following Roz Savage as she attempts to row across the Pacific Ocean.

rozsavageOnce again I have been captivated by someone who is attempting to accomplish something which is truly amazing. Roz Savage is attempting to row solo across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Australia. Her attempt will encompass three years and 7600 miles. Roz has previously rowed 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, which is an amazing feat in itself. The boat she is rowing is 23 feet long and 6 feet wide and is named the Brocade. I am amazed at the courage, skill and determination that Roz demonstrates in attempting such a daunting undertaking. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be in the vast Pacific Ocean all alone in such a small boat for such a long time. Her motivation for such an undertaking is to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire other to rise to their own challenges. I must say that she has already accomplished one of the goals with me. I’m not saying that I plan to start rowing across the Pacific by myself but I am inspired to finally start planning for a long awaited vacation to the Arctic tundra of Alaska to see the caribou migration.

The other person who has captivated me is Dee Caffari, who sailed solo around the world against the prevailing winds several years ago. I followed her journey on her web site and by plotting her course on Google Earth. These two women are obviously cut from the same cloth. I salute them both and thank them for providing me with a sense of wonder and excitement in my own life. You can learn more about Roz’s epic journey and monitor her progress on her web site.
