Don imus calls police racists in his latest controversy

By • on June 24, 2008

don_imus_freshintel The latest Imus controversy erupted last Monday morning when sportscaster Warner Wolf told Imus that NFL player Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones wanted people to stop referring to him as ‘Pacman’ and instead use Adam or Jones. “He’s been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005,” Wolf said. Jones request was an attempt to disassociate himself with his well known history of trouble. Imus then asked “What color is he?”. Wolf responded with “He’s African-American,” to which Imus responded “Well, there you go. Now we know.”

After controversy erupted over this apparent racial remark, Imus was quick to defend himself with a ridiculous defense. According to Imus he was making “a sarcastic point” that police often unfairly target blacks when he asked about Jones’ race on his show. But no mention of this was made on the radio show, the remark was left hanging just as it was uttered. You would have thought that with Imus’ previous troubles with his Rutgers comments he would not be so ambiguous with statements that could have racial overtones.

He’s a football player. He is a lovely kid. He was out there having fun. What people should be outraged about is that they arrest blacks for no reason, they shoot blacks for no reason, and I mean there’s no reason to arrest this kid six times.

So police were just picking on him because he was black? I guess the police must have a special task force that follows Jones around and arrests him whenever they are bored. The NFL suspended Jones in April 2007 after an incident in Las Vegas where Jones allegedly got into an altercation with an exotic dancer and security guard. Witnesses said a member of  Jones’ entourage later returned to the club and fired a gun into the crowd. Just having fun Mr. Imus? The Associated Press reports that Jones has been involved in 12 incidents requiring police intervention since 2005. Boy that special police task force assigned to harass Jones has certainly been busy. There are many African-American players in the NFL and almost none of them have a criminal record. So I guess the police are only racially profiling Jones.

So in his defense Imus is calling all police racists who arrest blacks and murder blacks for no reason. Imus should be fired for those remarks alone but everyone knows calling whites racists won’t get you fired. So why not use it for his defense. I think Imus meant exactly what he meant to say, that African-Americans are more inclined to crime than other races. For that blatantly racist remark  Imus deserves to be fired also. The Rev. Al Sharpton should call for his dismissal for both reasons but sadly Rev. Sharpton was quoted on Tuesday as saying that “I hope he meant what he said,” referring to Imus’ explanation. So I guess the Rev. Sharpton is OK with calling the police racists too. If Imus is not fired for this I wonder what kind of wild defense he will come up with the next time. For with Don Imus I am sure there will be a next time.
